behind the scenes: davines woman shoot 2011

Okay, I know it’s been what seems like an epic hiatus from blogging.  Many apologies for my absence. The summer has brought on many blog posting obstacles such as an overwhelming amount of bridal work, teaching, general summer shenanigans and a phenomenal photoshoot for the Davines Woman competition.

It’s no secret how much I love and respect all my colleagues and am always finding inspiration in their craft. It’s always a pleasure to have the opportunity to collaborate with them on a photoshoot and construct makeup looks that synergize with the beautiful hair they create. I wanted to share with you some of my favourite “behind the scenes” photos that I snapped in between contributing my makeup expertise on set.

And now for the final shots. I am so proud of these photos. The shoot was awesome and the energy was beyond fun.

stay put! – makeup setting sprays

Summer’s almost here and with it comes a good dose of humidity. For us makeup lovers and wearers, this means the struggle for long lasting makeup that can withstand all the moisture in the air and sweating that tends to make everything melt away throughout the day.

There are a few products on the market at the moment that are the perfect solution. More specifically, the notorious setting spray. I know that these have been around for quite some time now for makeup artists to use professionally, but older formulas had the reputation of being heavy and sticky which certainly didn’t go over well with the everyday lady. New formulas are now abundant, and bring a refreshing re-vamp to how they feel and wear over our makeup.

Here is a small compilation of some makeup setting sprays that I think are worth a try.

[MAC FIX +]

This water based toning mist is infused with vitamins and botanicals to hydrate and calm the skin. It makes for a very lovely gentle setting spray as well as a great addition to your skincare regimen.

Skin Type: ALL

$22.50 CDN

[MAKEUP FOR EVER MIST & FIX]

This spray mists a weightless and invisible film on the skin that protects makeup from environmental elements. This works great for everyday as well as photoshoots, allowing makeup to stay in place and spares you from constantly powdering.

Skin Type: ALL

$27 USD

[URBAN DECAY SETTING SPRAYS]

DE SLICK

Skin Type: OILY

This weightless formula is great for oily skin because of its ability to absorb excess sebum and control shine on the skin. Urban Decay’s unique Temperature Control Technology actually lowers the temperature of your makeup to hold everything in place. A simple misting of this over your makeup and it won’t budge all day.

$29 USD

DEW ME

Skin Type: DRY/COMBINATION

For those on the drier end of the spectrum, this spray moisturizes while it keeps makeup in place. The lightweight formula feels amazing on the skin and helps prevent makeup from settling into fine lines and powder from feeling cakey. It leaves your skin looking radiant, glowing and hydrated. This spray also contains the Temperature Control Technology like the De Slick, which lowers the temperature of your makeup for longevity.

$29 USD

ALL NIGHTER

Skin Type: ALL

Urban Decay collaborated with SKINDINÄVIA to make this brilliant setting spray that keeps your makeup on for 16 hours. Makeup withstands humidity and doesn’t dry you out in the colder weather – a good all around product for any occasion and skin type. This also incorporates UD’s patented Temperature Control Technology found in its trilogy of setting sprays.

lips: Marcelle Rouge Xpression

I recently got my hands on the 9 new Rouge Xpression lipstick shades to play around with. This collection of rich neutrals and sassy brights are the perfect compliment to the hot looks for spring/summer this year. The colours apply beautifully and wear like a dream. They contain a maxi-lip complex to moisturize and hydrate the delicate lip area so you are more than smooch ready.

I have swatched the following 8 shades to share with you all. Unfortunately, I misplaced the Jezebel lipstick (which was a lovely mauve shade), so that last lonely lipstick is not included in the mix.

In any case, there is a shade for everyone in this collection to suit your every mood. From sexy to demure, classic to trendy – I hope you enjoy.

(L-R) Amore, Cleopatra, Paris Rose, Couture

(L-R) Romanesque, Attitude, Mauve Avant-Garde, Feline

  • AMORE (cream) – a cherry red
  • CLEOPATRA (cream) – a wearable violet-pink
  • PARIS ROSE (cream) – a sexy coral
  • COUTURE (pearl) – a brown with a purpleish undertone

  • ROMANESQUE (pearl) – a warm nude with a hint-o-pink
  • ATTITUDE (cream) – a cool fawn shade
  • MAUVE AVANT-GARDE (cream) – a dark-medium warm brown
  • FELINE (pearl) – a slightly pearly red-aubergine brown

My favourites: Paris Rose, Cleopatra, Jezebel (not shown) and Romanesque

My not-so-favourite: Attitude (it looked terrible on me)

trend: s/s 2011 – brights

After creating my last FOTD post, I thought I would share with all of you makeup lovers some product ideas to incorporate some of this years Spring/Summer bright makeup trend.

I have always been a sucker for ALL bright makeup. Vivid tones on the lips and eyes can really create some versatile looks ranging from ladylike and demure to punk rock vixen. It’s okay to add a little punch to your makeup regimen from time to time. I know not everyone is designed  or comfortable rocking a neon orange lip or acid green eyeshadow, so if you are hesitant, try toning the bright look down a notch. Rather than an opaque lipstick or eyeshadow shade, create a wash of sheer brights on the lids and opt for a vivid stain on the mouth. Also, try to choose one or the other. Do a neutral eye with a punchy lip and vice versa.  Give it a try. You just might surprise yourself.
