behind the scenes: davines WSC pre-show

As you saw in my last blog post, there was a Davines Woman competition/photoshoot that some of my colleagues submitted to in June. Yesterday was the big show for the Canadian top ten finalists and I was hard at work backstage lending my makeup prowess for the pre-show extravaganza. Working with the creative genius’ Melanie Bourne and Paul Taylor, their vision was edgy, sexy and oozing glamour. Avant-garde hair mixed with an old Hollywood femininity synergized with Dior and McQueen style makeup and the AMAZING styling talents of Rebecca Mezger. The models were just stunning and the team pulled together a fantastic, high-energy show that was a definite crowd-pleaser.

Naturally I was snapping shots backstage in my usual paparazzi mode, so here are a few of my favourites.

behind the scenes: davines woman shoot 2011

Okay, I know it’s been what seems like an epic hiatus from blogging.  Many apologies for my absence. The summer has brought on many blog posting obstacles such as an overwhelming amount of bridal work, teaching, general summer shenanigans and a phenomenal photoshoot for the Davines Woman competition.

It’s no secret how much I love and respect all my colleagues and am always finding inspiration in their craft. It’s always a pleasure to have the opportunity to collaborate with them on a photoshoot and construct makeup looks that synergize with the beautiful hair they create. I wanted to share with you some of my favourite “behind the scenes” photos that I snapped in between contributing my makeup expertise on set.

And now for the final shots. I am so proud of these photos. The shoot was awesome and the energy was beyond fun.

behind the scenes: allilON show

If you follow me on Facebook and/or Twitter, you may have known that I was pretty excited to be working backstage doing makeup for the allilON show. The hair team was oozing with inspiration and talent which brought a fun energy behind the scenes. I was so incredibly happy to have been a part of this show. The crew presented hair that was a perfect synergy of femininity, playful yet rich colour and the most meticulous attention to detail.

As for the makeup, the mission was to evoke a playful sexyness using candied colours. The models were so amazing to work on and so beautiful. Here are some of the photographs I took throughout the day. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

The fierce duo strike a pose backstage right before show time.

Love this colour combo!

The detail of this cut left me speechless – so amazing!

This beauty was getting prepped before her cut. I loved doing this girls makeup. Those eyes!

‘Cos you know it was SO hard to make this girl any more stunning…

This mix of eyeshadows made me a happy makeup artist – and that hair colour…..WOW!

event: lg fashion week – joe fresh style + bustle

I had the  opportunity to attend a couple of shows on Tuesday at LG Fashion Week in Toronto. It was a last-minute affair for me, but I grabbed my fabulous friend Mark, threw an outfit and face together and off we went.

I had never been to Fashion Week before and I was in heaven with all the beautiful and eclectic people that were in attendance. I was in people-watching overload! With a glass of vino in hand, I grabbed my spot in the VIP FDCC line to get into the Joe Fresh Style show.

Joe Fresh Style showed a gorgeous collection of neutral tones with pops of bright orange, jade and blue. Classic cuts paired with splashes of texture were a common theme. I wanted the orange wool coat the moment I laid eyes on it.

The hair was simple. Imperfectly straight and with a center part, it looked effortlessly beautiful. The makeup was minimalist chic. Fresh, semi-matte skin, natural yet groomed brows, sheer washes of gold on the lids and bronzed skin were the perfect complement to the collection.

The show was a full house and an absolute success! I still can’t believe that the clothes are so chic AND affordable. Amazing.

After the first show ended, I lined up immediately for the last show (and the most anticipated) of the night – Bustle. Running a fashionably forty minutes late, I was happy to finally get to my seat and enjoy.

The show started with a black & white video intro of a beautiful man driving to a northern lodge and dog sledding which transitioned into him heading onto the runway to start the show. Full of exceptionally handsome male models, I was impressed with the sexy yet rugged theme of the collection. The oh-so-Canadian medley of tailored pieces paired with casual chic were infused with plaid jackets, relaxed fit pants and knits. Models donned axes, snifters of brandy and posed with a sled at the foot of the runway to tie into the ski-lodge theme. It was certainly MORE than worth the wait!

What a fabulous way to spend a normally mundane Tuesday. I can’t wait for the next LG Fashion Week. I’m officially addicted! Look out!

trend: s/s 2011 – brights

After creating my last FOTD post, I thought I would share with all of you makeup lovers some product ideas to incorporate some of this years Spring/Summer bright makeup trend.

I have always been a sucker for ALL bright makeup. Vivid tones on the lips and eyes can really create some versatile looks ranging from ladylike and demure to punk rock vixen. It’s okay to add a little punch to your makeup regimen from time to time. I know not everyone is designed  or comfortable rocking a neon orange lip or acid green eyeshadow, so if you are hesitant, try toning the bright look down a notch. Rather than an opaque lipstick or eyeshadow shade, create a wash of sheer brights on the lids and opt for a vivid stain on the mouth. Also, try to choose one or the other. Do a neutral eye with a punchy lip and vice versa.  Give it a try. You just might surprise yourself.
