behind the scenes: allilON show

If you follow me on Facebook and/or Twitter, you may have known that I was pretty excited to be working backstage doing makeup for the allilON show. The hair team was oozing with inspiration and talent which brought a fun energy behind the scenes. I was so incredibly happy to have been a part of this show. The crew presented hair that was a perfect synergy of femininity, playful yet rich colour and the most meticulous attention to detail.

As for the makeup, the mission was to evoke a playful sexyness using candied colours. The models were so amazing to work on and so beautiful. Here are some of the photographs I took throughout the day. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

The fierce duo strike a pose backstage right before show time.

Love this colour combo!

The detail of this cut left me speechless – so amazing!

This beauty was getting prepped before her cut. I loved doing this girls makeup. Those eyes!

‘Cos you know it was SO hard to make this girl any more stunning…

This mix of eyeshadows made me a happy makeup artist – and that hair colour…..WOW!

books: beauty lit

Other than lipglosses, eyeshadows, powders, brushes and pretty much ALL makeup, another thing I like to collect are beautiful makeup books. There is always a never-ending supply of inspiring images and tricks of the trade by individual beauty pros. Sipping on a cup of tea and flipping through those glossy pages is a guilty pleasure I indulge in quite frequently.

Sometimes as a makeup artist you get immersed in the hustle and bustle of your job and forget to stop and check out what others are doing in your field. Sharing and inspiring one another keeps you on top of your game and helps you educate yourself in new or different techniques in the makeup world.

Here are a few of my favourite reads:

Making Faces by Kevyn Aucoin, (1999)

This late makeup genius was a visionary in the makeup world. Despite being published over ten years ago, these pages are filled with transformations that STILL blow my mind. This book is a staple for any makeup lovers collection.

Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual by Bobbi Brown, (2008)

An amazing manual for all levels of makeup application. Has a fabulous breakdown of how to create a flawless complexion and even a section on how to break into the ‘biz’.

The Beauty of Color by Iman, (2006)

This book is a celebration of women of colour. The photography is gorgeous and features a great selection of looks on celebrities and real women. Makes a fantastic coffee table book!

Makeup: The Ultimate Guide by Rae Morris, (2008)

This book by one of Australia’s top makeup artists features gorgeous step-by-step guides to create luxuriously high fashion looks. The photography is done by noted fashion photographer, Steven Chee and is nothing short of a visual dream.

Makeup Masterclass by Jemma Kidd, (2009)

Jemma Kidd has created a stunning book that is a joy to read and be inspired. I love how she breaks down high fashion makeup looks for everyday wear. Filled with tips, tricks and step-by-step techniques, you can tell why so many aspiring makeup artists are choosing Jemma’s popular London school for their training.

About Face by Scott Barnes, (2010)

Scott Barnes is a celebrity makeup artist with a fabulous technique to creating a gorgeous face. In this book he breaks down his transformations on real women and the results are breathtaking. I absolutely love his approach to highlighting and contouring. Definitely a must read!

event: toronto beauty blogger brunch

I had the supreme pleasure of welcoming 2011 by a delightful afternoon of brunch and beauty with the TBB girls. Hosted by the lovely and talented, Farah from Faces by Farah, the gathering of like-minded beauty lovers was another success. I even indulged in a little beauty retail therapy with a few of the ladies after our lovely meal.

Here are a couple of pics:

The TBB ladies mingling

Amelia from In The Pink Of Things

The adorable Jill of Batting A Lash

Farah of Faces By Farah & Jenn from So Very Fabulous

Looking lovely & striking a pose

WHAT I INDULGED IN:

A perfect Caesar

Eggs Florentine – pumpernickel bread with cream cheese, spinach, smoked salmon and two soft poached eggs

And the day wouldn’t be complete without a little bit of perusing at some of the preferred beauty haunts – MAC, Sephora and Holt Renfrew.

The “Motherland”

Scoping out the Shu Uemura lashes at Holts

These rainbow ones were one of my favourites!

Going gaga over some bling!

Gratuitous MAC shot…

I had a blast ladies & I can’t wait until the next one.

Thanks xo
